If only I had...

...a laptop. Why, next week when I'm on jury duty, I could sit there and blog all the live-long day. Well, I suppose I'd also have to have an Intertube connection, too, but surely there's a wireless connection somewhere in or near the courthouse I could jump on surreptitiously. If I had a laptop.

I guess I'll have to fall back on the old standard, reading a book. Or I could join the crew that usually gathers by the television and watches soap operas. Or I could sleep. I wonder if anyone would object to some guy in a sleeping bag, if I get over in a quiet corner?

And just how is it that I have been called for jury duty for what seems a relatively large number of times over the past few years? Seems like it comes around every two years or so, whereas Reba's never even been called! It's not that I don't like it--I actually do enjoy parts of it. Civic duty and all that. It's just that the waiting to get called part is boring. Maybe if they had a show. Have some of the local theater companies come and perform or something. Or maybe some video games. Or a slot car track! That would be cool.

Anyway, all that to say I again need someone to volunteer to host next week's Thursday Three.

You have to go down there the whole week? They sent me a mail thingy, and I called in every night to see if I had to go down the next day.

I almost didn't have to, and then they called my number for Friday. I didn't get picked, and I'm clean for six years at the county level.

I've been called up twice.

The first time was in WI would have been after I had just given birth to my oldest and had just moved to VA. That was an easy letter to write.

The second time was when Max and Rebecca were just babes in arms so again I could beg off.

I'd be happy to serve, just not with infants in tow.

Dan, the way we usually work it is that the first day the people with excuses get sent home first. If you don't get called or seated the first couple of days, they generally will let a big group go on Wednesday. The smaller group will come back Thursday, and if they aren't needed, they get released. It's rare to have to come back on Friday, unless you're actually on a jury.

I once spent three years on an Army Courts-Martial Board and never sat a case. I was pre-emptively struck by either the Trial or Defense Counsel every time. I guess it pays to be well known.

Okay, well known as being a bit crazy. I didn't even have to wear a bowtie.

Unfortunately, I'm not well-known. I might have to get me a bow tie.

My lawyer friend say the bowtie thing doesn't work unless they already know you are a bit "tetched".

I suppose it is too late to walk around the courthouse acting really weird.

Of course that wouldn't work anyway since you would just fit in with regulars.

They'll probably just make you a judge.

"Judge Possum" sorta has a nice ring to it.

A Bozo the Clown outfit might be better.

BTW, Miss Kathie has jury duty next month.

Maybe if I decide not to wear pants...

Oh, do wear the overalls. With a pocket protector.

It's a shame your IT department can't set you up with a loaner laptop. You could use the excuse of wanting to check your e-mails while you're out. Maybe you can rent a laptop?

Heheheeeee--you're so funny, Marc--LOANER! We can barely get them to give us a laptop when we have to use one for a meeting! Renting is a much more plausible option. Although, since it is an option that requires spending money, is a no-go.

I suppose reading a book won't be too bad.
