You know, even WITHOUT carpooling...

...sometimes you still wind up being late. I spent nearly 20 minutes waiting at the 22nd Street exit ramp. Seems there had been a rear-end collision at the foot of the ramp, blocking one of the two lanes. ::sigh::

Sounds like Huntsville. One of my backup routes is in the 14th month of a 6 month upgrade. We are assured that they should be finished in another 6 months. You can be assured of at least one wreck a day.

The funny thing is that this exit is usually--and remarkably--accident free. There's a billion different ways to have a wreck on it, but it rarely happens. I guess everyone, or at least, ALMOST everyone, is wary enough to be extra careful and maybe even occasionally look up from the newspaper, or not try to get stuff out of the microwave.

Traffic was bad up here too, but the back road routes all go through flood zones, and we've been getting a lot of rain since Friday.

I used to think I was saving time by taking surface streets when it got crowded on the Interstate, but they get even more crowded from everyone else having the exact same idea, so it invariably takes longer. The only way it doesn't is if the Interstate is completely shut down.

Around here this is usually one of two reasons--a giant coil of steel has fallen off a truck and punched a hole in the deck, or a gasoline tanker has hit an abutment and burst into flames.
