How odd.

New Measurement: Earth Smaller Than Thought Y'know, I never realized anyone had ever measured the size of thought.

The article isn't a whole lot smarter than the headline.

So how 'new' is the VLBI program? I recall that VLBI was used to track the Apollo lunar rover in its travels, so it's been around for over 30 yrs.

Does global warming cause global shrinking?

Steevil, Steevil, Steevil--when will you learn that until the newspaper says something is new, it's not new!? And what's all this "Apollo" stuff you're talking about!?

Actually, Jim, global shrinkage is caused by the Earth jumping into a cold swimming pool.

You would think that with all of the satellites and GPS thing-a-majiggies we have, we could figure out an accurate measurement. But my thoughts aren't all that big either. See how my sentences fragment ...

Maybe what's needed is a better reference point ... if we could only get funding to position a super-sighting-laser on the moon ... hmmm, how about a "Laze Earth" benefit concert! We could burn up a few carbon credits holding it, especially if plenty of roasted pork products are served. Sounds like a job for the AoW Executive Committee.

So you're saying my suggestion of wrapping a string around the Earth isn't a good one?

Dang.

Now what am I going to do with all this string!?

Posted by: Terry Oglesby at July 6, 2007 12:48 PM

Cut it into 2 inch pieces so it won't be useful for anything.

Is it water-proof or water-absorbent?

Posted by: Spud at July 6, 2007 02:16 PM

Both. And inflammable.

Sorry I didn't give the reference before:

SIMPSON'S INDIVIDUAL STRINGETTES

Posted by: Spud at July 6, 2007 02:44 PM

OOoohhhh--well, my fault on that, but it's just that when you said "2 inch" instead of "3 inch," I compleatly missed the reference.

Posted by: Terry Oglesby at July 6, 2007 03:02 PM

What's one inch? ONLY STRING?! It's everything!

Look here--I didn't come here expecting some sort of Spanish Inquisition!
