One is reminded...

...of an old joke: Two Jews, sentenced to death by the czar, are before the firing squad. They are offered blindfolds. One says to the officer in charge, "You can stuff your blindfold!" The second Jew responds, "Shh! Don't make trouble!"

Nice one, and one I'd never heard. Which leads to the other Tsarist Russia joke I know:

An old man is sitting on a park bench in St. Petersburg reading a Hebrew newspaper. A cop walks up and says "Hey, old man! Don't you know the Tsar made it illegal to read anything but Russian?"

The gentleman replies "well, in heaven they speak Hebrew, and I want to be prepared, as I'm surely going to die soon." "Well" asks the cop "what if you end up in the other place?"

"Oh, in that case I'll be fine. I already speak Russian."
