A Matter of Degree

Steevil, famous NASA rocket scientist and observer of culture both low and high, sends along this MSNBC article in which the authoress deigns to explain the "allure" of the so-called "white-trash" culture we seem to be immersed in at the moment.

Steevil says, "The author claims to be white trash herself, but seems as clueless as any MSM chick."

Well, bless her heart.

In any event, as I have said before there is a distinction that must be made between the good ol' boy, the redneck, and po' white trash; that being, that one must never be given firearms, one must never be given liquor, and one must never be given either.

The trick, of course, is in knowing which is which.

I especially like your "well bless her heart" comment. I filled in my own "but".

My Mama used to say, "We may be poor, but we aren't trash". Mama was into correct grammar although she only made it to through the 8th grade.

I am trying to figure out which one I could give firearms to. None seem to be a real good choice.

Of course, I didn't get her Cheney comment either. Does she mean that hunting (Disclaimer: Haven't hunted in over 40 years) is a "white trash" activity? If she does, she obviously hasn't checked out the price of hunting leases.

And hunting with a 28 ga. shotgun is hardly white trash. I doubt if any white trash guys have even heard of shotguns smaller than 20 ga. and .410.

As I said, Larry--the trick is in knowing which is which. And yes, I suppose anything related to firearms automatically makes one white trash, at least in the author's estimation. As you imply, she's probably never priced a Merkel.

But, again, bless her.

Steevil,

I have to admit that I had no idea there was a 28 gauge shotgun. Of course, I spent many years measuring "weapons" in millimeters so that gauge stuff really throws me off.

I would get upset by the whole article if I had not heard two women discussing the Dollar General store. One said that she really liked Dollar General since you didn't have to get dressed up to go there like you did for Walmart.

To quote Dave Barry, "I'm not making this up".

Well, it's true, Larry.

Larry,

In looking up 28 ga. shotguns, I found out that the gauge is the number of balls to fit the gun that can be gotten out of a pound of lead. I also found out there's such a thing as a 10 ga. shotgun. My shoulder hurts just knowing that.

I must confess that I have pined for an Ithaca Mag-10 Roadblocker for many, many years. I wonder what that makes me?

Can you buy that at the Dollar Store?

Posted by: Steevil (Dr Weevil's bro Steve) at April 25, 2006 03:50 PM

Don't I wish. They haven't been made for years.

Terry answered a lot of questions regarding guns in the comments to

He packed a lot of information in there.

"Whether it’s America’s embrace of our verbally-challenged president,"

If this is an embrace, I'd hate to see what America would say to a Prez they didn't like....

Thank you, Miss Janis--and to think, you didn't even have to go through the "Ask Dr. Possum" rigamarole.

And Phil, as for our verbally-challenged President, having read and heard so many of our illustrious Fourth Estaters, I would say none of them have much room to be casting stones at his inarticulatude.

Wow, thanks Terry and Miss Janis! I knew there was such a thing as a 28 gauge shotgun, but had never been able to figure out how that size compared to a .410 shotgun. As that chart shows a 28 gauge is quite a bit bigger.

And I almost bought a ten gauge a few years ago but decided I probably would not like the recoil of a shotgun that size.

I imagine if you were using magnum loads, it probably would take some getting used to.
