My mother!

Gets me to look all that stuff up for her (even though she could do it from her desk, seeing as how she has that Internet stuff at work just like I do) and in the middle of all this, I find out she's going to be at my SISTER'S house in MOBILE for THANKSGIVING! The NERVE of her running away like that!

We might just have to make the drive down, just to foil her evil plan of avoiding us.

As for roofing, it's hard to do over the phone, but basically, she just needs a nice, basic, 25 year, three-tab 225# fiberglass type. So many different people make them that I told her she needs to just call several roofers, get them to give her a price, and give her the product information on the type of shingle they intend on nailing down, and then we can compare them after we know what they want to use.

And with her trying to skip out on the bill like that, I'm gonna add in a pecan pie. That'll show her.

If I ever build again I hope I get the SO and or my builder to shoot me/send me to Bedlam before I use a "nice, basic, 25 year, three-tab 225# fiberglass type shingle". For some reason I'm not sure of I just loath the way they look and really loath how they handle normal extremes of weather. I'd like copper flashed slate but I'm way to cheap so My Moron™ dream home will have metal roofing on top of a nice R-60 to 75 SIP. Walls will be SIP too, R-40 for them (real stuco or a combo of that with Hardi plank/shingle) and 6K psi CFI to form the basement. Windows are my prob, My Moron™ home MUST have nice site appropriate glazing. my cheap side says Pella or Anderson aluminium over wood (factory colored) but the spendthrift says in that evil lil voice H-Windows, H-Windows, what's a Moron™ to do? HVAC will be closed loop heat pump into both HVLP and PEX tubed radiant for winter and just use the mini-ducting for cooling. Since this house will be very tight positive mechanical venting w/a air to air exchanger. I'd also use that Muy Spendy heat pump for domestic hot water (All plumbing runs made of PEX) too. Now isn't that a nice My Moron™ house?

Beeee-utiful! You also might want to consider earth sheltering to keep from paying quite so much for all that wall insulation. Second, what, no solar electric panels!? Also need to consider solar water heating. Metal roofing--consider metal shingles rather than standing seam. As with all shingle products, there is a bit more redundancy, and it's easier to get an acceptable looking job. Windows--consider aluminum clad wood--less maintenance. Wall finishes--stucco is a continual maintenance item--if you like it, fine, but it requires regular upkeep. If you like all this insulation and mass wall type stuff, consider white architectural concrete with a nice form-liner pattern for the walls, rather than using siding or stucco. Last, consider gray water use to reduce the amount of fresh water used.

Sips are way cheaper than stick built but yes I'd look for a site to berm in addition.

Hey Terry I'd still live in a full 4 season macro climate, I like solar but w/o tax breaks from State/Feds I think the TCO is too high. Um, maybe a combo of solar and hydro. or wind might work.

Way true on the looks dept. but SSMs do right well up in handling the weather, snow and ice build up just never happen and hail up to softball is just a non-issue. If this was a money no limit My Moron™ house I'd go w/a copper shingle like I've seen in Japan. Simple & beautiful.

Very true and the finish will far out last a field applied one.

Wall finishes--stucco is a continual maintenance item--if you like it, fine, but it requires regular upkeep. If you like all this insulation and mass wall type stuff, consider white architectural concrete with a nice form-liner pattern for the walls, rather than using siding or stucco.

Prolly a combo of all 3 but then I'm not that big a fan of Bauhaus type modern.

Last, consider gray water use to reduce the amount of fresh water used.

Yeppers and cistern the roof runoffs too, it's IMO a durn shame we have to pay through the nose for potable water just for external usage.
